2016 was a landmark year for Diversionary. According to The San Diego Lesbian and Gay News Network, “Diversionary is enjoying a renaissance.” Diversionary was cited as “resurgent” when The Mystery of Love & Sex was included in the Best of 2016 by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
At the 2016 Craig Noel Awards, Diversionary was nominated for five awards and received The DonBraunagel Award for Outstanding Work by a Small Theatre. Additionally, Diversionary took home Craig Noel Awards for Best Score (Composer Tim Rosser: The Boy Who Danced On Air) and Best Actor in a Musical (Justin Huertas: Lizard Boy). Diversionary was also delighted that Sean Fanning was honored as “Designer of The Year,” in part for his three set designs at Diversionary (Now Or Later, The Boy Who Danced On Air, The Mystery of Love & Sex).
